DKO’s design concept for two linear sites in Penrith aims to create a series of vertical villages that animate the street, each with different characters and scales. Save this picture!© Ben GuthrieSave this picture!Site PlanSave this picture!© Ben GuthrieThe buildings have been designed to mediate between the more considerable height, scale and proportion of adjacent apartment developments and the fine grain, smaller terraces and houses in the surrounding context. This is paired with the vision to create a network of smaller, more approachable and diverse communities. Save this picture!© Ben GuthrieSave this picture!© Ben GuthrieThe buildings are highly articulated and have been visually broken down into volumes. The massing sensitively responds to existing conditions and is aligned with Penrith Council’s future plans for the area. The visual bulk of the buildings is softened further due to material selection, massing techniques, and landscaping. The façade is composed primarily of pre-cast concrete of varying tones with highlights of black metal screens and window hoods. The brick element contributes to the texture and materiality of the façade and responds to the general character of the surrounding buildings.Save this picture!© Ben GuthrieIn different sizes and layouts, a variety of dwelling typologies have been considered within the overall scheme, offering opportunities for families of all scales and helping to create a highly diverse community. Save this picture!© Ben GuthriePrivate and communal open space has been skilfully woven throughout the development. Street landscaping wrapping around each buildings’ edges creates a green buffer while establishing a clear and engaging entry for residents. Unique double-storey communal spaces further break up the building mass, creating generous open green zones supporting various resident activities – from relaxation and play to food production and gatherings. These facilities will foster social interactions between residents and promote a real sense of community.Save this picture!© Ben GuthrieThe Lord Sheffield Circuit apartments aim to reduce reliance on mechanical heating and cooling through carefully considered passive design solutions. Deep balconies, screening and shading devices offer additional sun protection, while 61% of apartments embrace cross-ventilation via open-plan floor plates to the corners and through the building’s depth. The building’s orientation takes full advantage of prevailing breezes to maximize fresh air movement, creating a comfortable indoor environment. Low energy lighting, energy-efficient water heaters, water-saving fittings, and fixtures have been specified throughout, with rainwater tanks onsite collecting for public and private gardens.Save this picture!© Ben GuthrieProject gallerySee allShow lessGround Floor Office / Takayuki Kuzushima and AssociatesSelected ProjectsThe Edge Office Building / Dub ArchitectsSelected ProjectsProject locationAddress:210 Lord Sheffield Cct, Penrith NSW 2750, AustraliaLocation to be used only as a reference. News March 18, 2021 Find out more Reporters Without Borders calls on the judicial authorities to clarify why Hossein Derakhshan, a leading blogger with Iranian and Canadian dual nationality, has been detained since 1 November. The judiciary’s spokesman yesterday reportedly said he was being held in connection with comments he posted online about key figures of the Shiite faith. “Yesterday’s official confirmation that Derakhshan is being held is yet another warning shot for free expression in Iran and a new attempt to intimidate the entire blogosphere,” Reporters Without Borders said. “We urge the authorities to say exactly what charges have been brought against him and to release him while they are being investigated, as envisaged by the law. His detention has gone on long enough.” Confirming Derakhshan’s detention yesterday, judiciary spokesman Ali Reza Jamshidi said one of the reasons for his arrest was what he had written about leading Shiite figures in his blog ( He would be held while an investigation was carried out, Jamshidi said. Derakhshan was arrested on 1 November when he was summoned before a Tehran revolutionary court. Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Jean-François Julliard wrote to Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, the head of the judicial system, in November asking him to confirm Derakhshan’s arrest and give the official reasons. Iran was the most repressive country in the world towards bloggers in 2008. Around 20 were arrested or attacked because of their blogs and five are currently detained. The government has said it is filtering more than 5 million websites. The authorities closed down Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi’s Human Rights Defenders Centre on 21 December. Launched in 2002, the Tehran-based centre provided free legal aid to journalists and human rights activists. This year marks 20 years of partnerships and funding assistance for qualified businesses in the state, with 20,683 companies providing training for 1,238,915 existing staff members.“Continuing education and workforce training allow everyone a path to future success and is a way for employers and employees to show allegiance and good faith in each other,” said Gov. Wolf. “It’s pivotal in strengthening our state’s workforce, our communities, and ultimately, our economy.”Last fiscal year, the commonwealth invested $7,896,801 in trainings and provided 30,460 employees with access to education in the areas of Essential Skills and Advanced Technology. Essential Skills training can include guidance in the areas of communication and teamwork, health and safety, business and computer operations, manufacturing fundamentals, and quality assurance. Advanced technology training can include guidance in the areas of advanced manufacturing technology, advanced software implementation, computer programming, and software engineering.“Job training helps people achieve their career goals and improve their quality of life, and workforce development is one of the strongest drivers of our economy,” said Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin. “WEDnetPA isn’t just a tool to help workers further their careers; it’s a tool that has helped us attract and retain businesses and grow Pennsylvania’s economy for the past two decades, and will continue to do so for decades to come.”“While other states also offer resources to help companies close the skills gap, WEDnetPA is unique in its approach,” said Statewide Director Thomas Venditti. “By networking with 25 colleges and universities, we leverage their existing professional workforce development staff to create a highly cost-effective way to provide help with incumbent worker training.”Workforce training grants align with Governor Wolf’s PAsmart workforce development initiative. The governor launched the innovative PAsmart initiative last year and secured a $10 million increase to $40 million for the program this year. PAsmart provides $20 million for science and technology education, $10 million for apprenticeships and job training, and new this year, an additional $10 million for career and technical education. This year’s annual report is available online. For more information about the Wolf Administration’s commitment to workforce development, visit the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) website or follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube.last_img read more
