Are credit union hot sites dead!?

first_img 1SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Kirk Drake Kirk Drake is founder and CEO of Ongoing Operations, LLC, a rapidly growing CUSO that provides complete business continuity and technology solutions. With its recent acquisition of Cloudworks, Ongoing Operations … Web: Details When Ongoing Operations got started, we were a collaborative project by 7 Washington DC area credit unions to establish a better hot site location with guaranteed recovery options.  Very quickly that evolved to needing to provide early Data Vaulting options, quick connectivity failover options and Business Continuity Plans.   However, fast forward 8 years and hundreds of recoveries later and I would argue the traditional credit union hot site is dead!Ultimately, it has been a slow death.  Each year, the technology has improved and the options for virtual recoveries increased. Today, it seems silly that anyone would purchase an entire second set of infrastructure.   There are three main technologies that have created this transition.  The first is virtualization, the second is BGP routing, and the third is software based replication tools.  Collectively they are enabling credit unions large and small to achieve super-fast recovery times without the traditional headaches.VMWare was created in 1998 and quickly has come to dominate the virtualization world. In the old days, you had to have two of each system so that when you restored your systems they would boot up correctly.  Virtualization changed all of this and is now so ubiquitous that other than one or two credit unions (and they aren’t OGO Clients), every credit union is using VMWare or Microsoft’s Virtualization software.  This software allows you to A) decouple of the physical hardware dependency, B) run multiple servers on the same piece of hardware, C) enabled cloud computing – eventually leading to not needing to have a dedicated hot site. The second technology is the creation of BGP routing protocol – the most current version came about in 2006 but earlier versions date back to the early internet days in 1994.   BGP routing enables your network to be setup to auto failover between several options. BGP is key element as over the past 10 years credit unions have moved from legacy T1 lines and Frame Relay circuits to VPN connections for Credit Card, Debit Card, ATM and Online Banking processing.  The ability to leverage the internet, BGP, and VPNs mean it is now possible to reroute all of your third party connections in seconds and without manual intervention.  This creates high-uptime at your production site and enables you to failover to your cloud backup site quickly.Lastly, there are three main tools out that leverage Virtualization for recovery purposes.  These include: 1) VM Wares SRM, or site recovery manager 2) A software product called Veeam, and 3) A company called Zerto which is the main technology behind Ongoing Operations Replicator.   There are probably another hundred but in our experience those are the best day in day out.   Our preference is for Zerto as it provides a security framework that enables the service provider (OGO in this case) to not add to the credit union’s IT Security Risk.Put all of these together and mix in some virtual desktop and VoIP based phones and not only can you recover your data quickly, efficiently, securely and offsite but you can also provide work from home tools that support your credit union employees.  Ultimately, we think Hot Sites still have a little life yet, especially for bigger, more complex environments and most importantly the folks that want to control every aspect themselves and not rely on anyone.  For those guys – credit union hot sites aren’t going anywhere!last_img read more

Back to training, Bayern’s Coman hopes to complete season

first_img“We’re doing technical work, at a safe distance from each other. It’s a bit like the end of the close season when you resume training individually.”Despite the resumption of training the German Football League (DFL) made it clear last week it was not known if or when the season would resume. The season has been suspended until at least April 30 with the DFL due to meet next Friday to decide the next step.Coman said he hoped all the effort the players had put in would not go to waste.”We work, we work, and I hope we can finish the season otherwise all that work will have been for nothing,” he said.Bayern had a four-point lead with nine matches remaining when the season was halted. Topics : Bundesliga clubs returned to training earlier this week after almost a month off due to the COVID-19 outbreak and while the players are still being kept at a safe distance from each other Bayern Munich forward Kingsley Coman is just happy to be back.Squads have been split into small groups or even pairs under strict measures to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, which has infected over 110,000 and killed more than 2,000 people in Germany.”We had not touched a ball on a football pitch for almost a month and even if we’re split in small groups it’s a pleasure to play again and step onto a field that has goals,” the France international told Eurosport on Fridaylast_img read more

No Complaints

first_imgI often complain about how schools run track meets.  Some don’t have enough workers, some have little supervision, and others are disorganized.  I don’t think I will ever complain again after attending my granddaughter’s city track meet in St. Paul, Minnesota.  It was a junior high city championship.Audrey runs hurdles, and it was the first event scheduled at 10 a.m.  The announcer gave first call and the girls warmed up.  No second call came.  The next call stated “we cannot start the meet until we get 30 volunteers from the audience.”  Finally, at 11 a.m. the hurdles were run.  They then did the 50-meter dash. (There were multiple heats of this for both boys & girls.) Instead of announcing the next event it was stated that the timing system failed and all hurdles would have to be run again!  This would not have been that bad had there only been 2 or 3 heats, but there were 10 heats for both boys and girls.  Since her 2 events were over, we left.We have no idea if they finished the meet that Saturday or if they had to continue it later.  What a mess!last_img read more

Sammy questions possible racism during SRH stint

first_img(ESPNCRICINFO) – Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy has questioned possible references to the colour of his skin while he was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) dressing room in IPL 2013 and 2014.He said he wasn’t aware at the time of the racist connotation of the word used, and has asked his former team-mates to clear the air on it.In a video post on Instagram on Monday, Sammy spoke of some of his team-mates calling him a “degrading” name. In an earlier Instagram Story, on June 7, he had said the word used was kalu, a Hindi word with a colour connotation. In Monday’s post, Sammy said he initially thought the word meant something “uplifting” or “funny” as it often caused “laughter in the moment”.Now that he knows the meaning, though, Sammy said he wanted his former team-mates – whom he did not name – to reach out to him and tell him if they had meant it in “any way, shape or form” that was degrading, and if so to apologise.Sammy said the word had been used for both himself and Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera. In his case, Sammy said, team-mates “called me that word over and over again to the point that I was even saying ‘that’s my name’”. He said he thought it meant “strong stallion”, but he came to know of the real meaning when listening to a show by US-based comedian Hasan Minhaj.“I was listening to Hasan Minhaj talking about how some of the people in his culture view or describe black people,” Sammy said in his Instagram post. “Now that doesn’t apply to everybody, but I say this because of something I experienced.(Previously, on the Instagram Stories post on June 7) I said I was angry after listening to him describing a word that they use to describe black people, which he was saying is not in a good way and it was degrading. Instantly I remembered when I played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013 and 2014, I was being called the exact same word that he described.“I will be messaging those people – you guys know who you are. I must admit, at the time in which I was being called that, I did not know what it meant. I thought it meant strong stallion or whatever it is, and I saw no problems with it because I was ignorant to the fact of what it meant; I thought it meant something else, something uplifting.“But, every time I was called it – it was me and Thisara Perera – there was always laughter in the moment. Me being a team man, I thought, hey, team-mates are happy, it must be something funny. You can understand my frustration and my anger when it was pointed out to me that it wasn’t funny at all, it was degrading.“So, I’m going to be texting you guys, and asking you guys, when you repeatedly called me that word over and over again to the point that I was even saying that’s my name, did you all mean it in any way, shape or form as a degrading word to me.“I’ve had great memories in all the dressing rooms I’ve been in, as a T20 player, as a leader in a dressing room, as a captain, I’ve always been one to build up a relationship or build up a team, not bring it down. So, all those who used to call me that, you guys know yourselves, some of you have my numbers, you have me on Instagram, on Twitter, wherever.“Reach out to me, let’s have a conversation. Because, if it was in any way, shape or form what Minhaj said it meant, I’m very disappointed, and I’ll still be angry, and deserve an apology from you guys, because I saw all of you guys as my brothers.“So, talk to me, reach out to me, please clear the air.”Sammy had played for Sunrisers in both 2013 and 2014, even captaining them in 2014. Perera had played for Sunrisers in 2013.The Sunrisers franchise has been asked for a comment. However, ESPNcricinfo understands that the franchise is unlikely to make any comment as Sammy did not report the matter at the time and also he has not pointed fingers at the franchise.ESPNcricinfo has also asked the BCCI for a comment.Sammy had also spoken out against racism last week, in the wake of the custodial killing of George Floyd, a black man, by a white policeman in Minneapolis. Floyd died in Minneapolis on May 25 after the police officer held him down with his knee on his neck for over eight minutes while he was handcuffed. The incident, captured on video, has sparked angry protests across the globe, with several cricketers speaking out as well. Sammy was among the very first active cricketers to publicly speak out after Floyd’s killing.last_img read more
