First there was the tsunami. Then Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Now Hurricane Stan has ravaged Central America, and a magnitude 7.6 earthquake has devastated South Asia. It’s been a cruel year for natural disasters, and a deadly one for tens of thousands of unfortunate people. For us, the fortunate ones who have been spared, there are some key lessons: Some things are beyond our control, and where there is suffering, our help is needed. “Compassion fatigue” may be a real, understandable phenomenon, but one we all need to get over. There is too much work to be done, too many worthwhile causes that need our support. It’s time for all of us to dig a little deeper, yet again.
