As he looked over the lecture hall he saw at least 100 glowing Apple icons staring back at him. Some students responded so strongly that they were ready to move to another school simply because their favorite computer brand was no longer supported at the school. Two toddlers died and eight others were taken ill at a government-run orphanage, prompting the district administration to order a probe. The authorities have taken sample of the milk being fed to children at the Rajkiya Shishu Sadan here, Mathura District Magistrate Sarvagya Ram Mishra said on Friday. Ten children of the orphanage fell ill on Wednesday, with two of them dying of diarrhoea within the last three days, Mr. Mishra added. Of the ten children, four serious cases were referred to Agra medical college, while the others are being treated at the Mathura district hospital here, he said. He said despite the best possible treatment, two children below one-and-half-years of age could not be saved and they died in Agra. The other hospitalised children are recovering, he added.“ADM (F&R) Brajesh Kumar has been asked to probe the death and illness of the children,” said Mr. Mishra, adding that he has been asked to submit his report within 24 hours.Milk sample taken As children taken ill were normally under one-and-half-years of age and are fed only milk, the milk sample has been lifted for examination, Mr. Mishra said. Though the exact cause of illness would be known only after the probe and forensic examination of the milk sample, it appears the children had an attack of diarrhoea, he added. There are around 50 children in the orphanage, with 30 of them being below two years of age.
Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am believes tech and music are one and the same. Rick Kern/Getty Images Will.i.am is perhaps best known as a musician and lead member of the Black Eyed Peas, but he’s also working to make a name for himself in tech. The singer, songwriter and producer has dabbled in wearables with products like the Puls smartband and the i.am+ Dial smartwatch, and in 2015 teamed up with Gucci to create a luxury phone-free smart band, which never materialized. He’s also launched products like a triangular backpack with speakers and a Foto.sosho iPhone case, and is the founder of i.am+, an AI-centered tech company. Now, Will.i.am is looking toward the future — one he believes will be shaped by tech like augmented and virtual reality. Devices like glasses will augment our world and free up our hands, he says, and technology will be more seamless. He imagines that musicians 100 years from now will have to do more than just write and perform songs. They’ll make VR experiences that audiences can virtually transport to. The future of entertainment is VR and AR. Will.i.am Will.i.am was pensive and enthusiastic about the future of tech when I spoke to him recently at Accenture’s innovation hub at Salesforce Tower in San Francisco. “The future of entertainment is VR and AR,” he said. “You’re creating worlds in VR and enriching environments with AR. I can’t wait for that to be the norm in our entertainment industry.”Ten years from now, he predicts, we won’t be staring at screens. Instead, sleek devices will show content right in front of our faces, eliminating the need for bulky gear resembling a helmet. That’s not to say Will.i.am is looking to create those products himself. His current passion is in artificial intelligence and natural language. His company i.am+ is focused on getting its AI system to be more efficient so that when people talk to a voice assistant, their search takes on a more conversational tone. Will.i.am doesn’t see his passion for music and tech as disparate. In fact, if more people knew how creative tech really is, more kids would want to be scientists and engineers, he says. “It’s the most creative industry in society today,” he told me. “Tech is everything. Music is tech. Our industry was founded on technology. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. Shares of private sector lender, Yes Bank, fell over five percent on Thursday after the bank announced a qualified institutional placement (QIP) issue or share sale of over $1 billion to boost its capital base.The Yes Bank stock closed at Rs. 1,326 on Thursday, down 5.65 percent from its previous close on the Bombay Stock Exchange.”The QIP is now opened across the world and we expect investors from across the world to participate. We are targeting $1 billion in line with the enabling resolution from our shareholders. This is growth capital for our bank, which is growing at 30 percent, and we will ensure that we continue to grow at that pace,” the Economic Times quoted Rana Kapoor, CEO at Yes Bank.A QIP is a process by which a listed company raises funds by selling its shares to institutional investors. During an interview with Bloomberg in June, the bank’s CEO had said that the QIP would result in diluting between 12-13.5 percent stake.Yes Bank is reportedly selling shares worth Rs. 6,600 crore (about $1 billion) to institutional investors at Rs.1, 410 per share. Goldman Sachs, Edelweiss, Religare, Motilal Oswal and HSBC are among some of the lender banks for the institutional placement issue.According to media reports, shareholders of the Mumbai-based bank had approved fund-raising to the tune of $1 billion.The bank had managed to raise about $500 million (about Rs. 2,900 crore) through the same route in May 2014. During the time, it had hired HSBC Holdings Plc, Deutsche Bank, Motilal Oswal Securities Limited, JM Financial Ltd and UBS in addition to Goldman Sachs for the fund raising.
