Turo Nearly every automaker has a connected-car element that allows owners to manipulate the car from afar. Smartcar created software that works across these borders, and its latest partnership could make renting some other person’s car a little easier.Turo, a peer-to-peer car sharing startup, announced on Monday that it has partnered with Smartcar to put its system to use as part of the rental process. Normally, when renting somebody else’s car on Turo, that person usually needs to be around to hand over the key. Instead of that, Smartcar’s system uses renters’ phones to wirelessly locate, lock and unlock cars without the need for the “hosts,” as Turo calls them, to be present.Here’s how it works. Hosts who have eligible vehicles will be notified, and using Smartcar’s backend software, they can connect their vehicle account with their Turo account. Once that happens, renters can use their own phone to find and unlock the vehicle. Most OEMs’ connected-car systems don’t let phones work as keys, though, and that’s the case here — the keys can be found inside the vehicle after unlocking, and that’s where to leave ’em when the rental term ends.It’s a huge boon for busy hosts. Now, they won’t need to move their schedules around to accommodate renters, allowing them to maintain an additional revenue stream with less potential annoyance. Some similar systems require hardware in the car, but not this one — it’s all done over the air, no OBD-II dongles or anything of that sort.As with many other fledgling partnerships, this one will start small. Turo will offer its Smartcar system in California and New Jersey to start, with the intention of rolling it out to the entire country later in 2019. Originally published May 6, 12:09 p.m. PT. AFP file photoUNICEF trucks filled with emergency water, sanitation and hygiene supplies for thousands of Rohingya children are headed to Cox’s Bazar, with a steady stream of supplies in the pipeline for the coming days and weeks.The UN body gave the update issuing a press release from Cox’s Bazar on Thursday.UNICEF said up to 400,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh since 25 August, with thousands more arriving every day.Around 60 per cent are children, according to preliminary estimates.The sheer number of refugees has overwhelmed pre-existing refugee camps, with new arrivals seeking shelter anywhere they can find space, according to the UNICEF news release.“There are acute shortages of everything, most critically shelter, food and clean water,” said Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF’s representative in Bangladesh.“Conditions on the ground place children at risk of high risk of water-borne disease. We have a monumental task ahead of us to protect these extremely vulnerable children.”UNICEF supplies include detergent powder, soap, and pitchers and jugs for containing water, along with nappies, sanitary napkins, towels and sandals.It is also supporting the Department of Public Health Engineering with water treatment plants and carriers, and is working with partners on the ground to install and rehabilitate tube wells.These items are part of a first wave of supplies that will massively scale-up UNICEF’s emergency response to the growing number of Rohingya children in Bangladesh, Beigbeder said.UNICEF has appealed for $7.3 million to provide emergency support to Rohingya children over the next four months.

Photo: Collected/Prothom AloThai Airways will conduct an investigation into the incident of tyre burst on landing by one of its flights at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka on Tuesday, reports UNB.”THAI will conduct an investigation as to the cause of the incident. THAI do apologize to all passengers for any inconvenience this may cause,” said the Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) in a statement.Flight Lieutenant Pratana Patanasiri, THAI vice president, Aviation Safety, Security and Standards Department said the flight TG321, operated with Boeing 777-200 aircraft, departed from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to Dhaka at 10.35 hours and arrived in Dhaka, at 12.10 hours (local time).”During touchdown at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) there was heavy rain,” reads the statement shared on its verified Facebook page.Captain of the flight found out that the aircraft’s tyres had burst and the captain took control of the aircraft until it landed safely.The aircraft carried 172 passengers and 14 cabin crew. All the passengers and crew were safe with no injury.The company urgently replaced spare parts necessary for the full operation of the aircraft and accommodated passengers who booked to travel on the return flight TG322 from Dhaka to Bangkok on Wednesday with a larger aircraft, Boeing 777-300.
