first_imgSadly this will also be his last for Team PNG. Raymond stepped onto the Olympic mat as a first Papua New Guinean Judoka in the 2012 London Olympics and 3 years later, jeis on another Olympic voyage, this time for Rio de Janeiro.Currently ranked 122 in the world and competing in the 66kg division, Ovinou will be Team PNG’s lone Judo representative to Rio.He is currently in Japan for training until the lead up to the South American qualifier-Panam Open in Argentina in March. In April he will also be fighting for merits in Canberra, Australia. For Judo the qualifiers are assessed through merit points that through participating in recognized competitions. The more points you have the greater chance you have of qualifying. He is currently ranked third in his division in Oceania. which placed him in a better position to qualify on merit because on each continent they have a quota of number of athletes that can qualify from that continent and Raymond is looking good on merit. He still has two fights that may still determine his condition but looks confident enough on merit to qualify for the second and final Olympic show.last_img read more
