Sponsor Post: Microsoft Retail Store

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#Sponsors#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Editor’s note: we offer our long-term sponsors the opportunity to write ‘Sponsor Posts’ and tell their story. These posts are clearly marked as written by sponsors, but we also want them to be useful and interesting to our readers. We hope you like the posts and we encourage you to support our sponsors by trying out their products.Coming soon to a mall near you: the Microsoft Retail Store.Yes, that’s right: Redmond, Washington’s favorite son wants a closer, snugglier relationship with you, the consumer.Given Microsoft’s relative lack of retail experience, and the fact that it plans to locate near its nemesis (well, one of its nemeses), the Apple Store, we wanted to help. So we came up with a list of ideas to help the big MS make its stores a hit.Warning: some of these are serious, others not so much. Which is which? You be the judge.Hold star-powered store opening events.Announce that Microsoft will celebrate all store openings with live skits featuring goofy bosom buddies Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld.Hire the very best people to run the stores. You only get one chance to make a good first impression, so make sure your people have the track record to pull this off.Offer diagnostic and repair services. If Geniuses can fix or replace any Apple-branded electronics still under warranty, then Microsoft’s retail staff can do the same for stuff that sports stickers claiming things like “Windows Vista Capable.”Build alliances with computer manufacturers to staff the Guru Bars. And why not? The big names have plenty riding on the launch of Windows 7. Besides, they’ve built up plenty of customer service expertise in places like Texas, California and Hyderabad. (Note: certain fine computer builders, like Bob & Doug’s Corner Computer Emporium, might not get a seat at the Bar.)Train all staff to maintain the highest level of professionalism. For instance, make sure associates smile politely when a customer walks up, grins, says “Hello, I’m a Mac” and elbows them in the ribs.Display Windows-based hardware for people to try.Show how Windows runs on computers, smartphones and whatever else Microsoft wants to convince people to buy.Promote fan clubs to celebrate previous Microsoft consumer successes.Start with enthusiasts for Microsoft Surface, Windows Tablet Edition, Passport, Vista and Sidekick.Run workshops for business users.Exploit current holes in software available for the Mac. For instance, bring in experts to explain how to set up popular accounting packages and, for lawyers, legal practice management systems.Run workshops for creative users.Run workshops showing how Windows computer users can start their artsy projects (photo books, websites, music videos) right out of the box. Have the workshops led by cute little girls who end each seminar by saying “I’m a PC and I’m four and a half.”Run safe computing workshops.Teach users the basics, like not opening all attachments, not clicking links in spam email and so forth.Run basic Windows repair workshops.Teach computer users how to: remove pre-loaded trial software; replace faulty .dlls; make changes in the Windows registry; manually uninstall software when Windows botches the job; effectively scan online forums for answers to other problems; and, when all else fails, reinstall Windows and all other software from the ground up.Create an X-Box gaming area.Preview the latest games, hold in-store tournaments and otherwise build excitement around Microsoft’s gaming platform. Contain this area in a soundproof room away from workshops, ideally in the mall display window so that everyone can see how rockin’ Microsoft is.Guerilla marketing (offense).Every day, send people to nearby Apple Stores to pose as shoppers, whine about how expensive Macs are, then proclaim loudly, “Maybe we should go PC.”Guerilla marketing (defense).Prepare a list of canned answers to anticipated questions from Apple operatives. Of particular importance, be ready to explain how Microsoft’s operating system is not a copy of Apple’s.Offer kids play area.Create a low “play table” where kids can sit down and show their parents how easily they can figure out a Windows computer.Store closing. To tell shoppers the store is closing for the day in a way they’re sure to understand, have the giant video wall display the Windows Blue Screen of Death. What do you want from Microsoft Retail Stores? Fastening Furring Strips to a Foam-Sheathed Wall

first_img Start Free Trial Already a member? Log in UPDATED March 1, 2012If you’re building a house with foam sheathing, and your siding is installed over vertical rainscreen strapping installed on top of the foam, how should you attach the strapping? Most builders screw the strapping through the foam into the studs; so far, so good. But what length screws should you use? And how closely should you space the screws?Answers to these questions can be found in a new technical bulletin published by FastenMaster, the company that manufactures Headlok screws. The bulletin, “Attaching Exterior Wall Covering Assemblies with Foam Sheathing to Wood Wall Framing,” is available from FastenMaster. If you follow FastenMaster’s prescriptive recommendations, your furring strips will adequately support the weight of the siding and will secure the furring strips to the wall in a way that resists wind and seismic forces.First, the basics:I have prepared two tables that incorporate FastenMaster’s recommendations. (My tables are more logical and easier to read than the table in the FastenMaster document, shown as Illustration 2, below.)The first table below is for houses with studs spaced 16 in. on center; the second is for houses with studs spaced 24 in. on center.Table 1 notes:Fasteners spaced 24 inches apart give you an allowable design wind pressure of 49 psf.Fasteners spaced 16 inches apart give you an allowable design wind pressure of 73 psf.Fasteners spaced 12 inches apart give you an allowable design wind pressure of 98 psf.Fasteners spaced 8 inches apart give you an allowable design wind pressure of 147 psf.Table 2 notes:Fasteners spaced 24 inches apart give you an allowable design wind pressure of 33 psf.Fasteners spaced 16 inches apart give you an allowable design wind pressure of 49 psf.Fasteners spaced 12 inches apart give you an allowable design wind pressure of 65 psf.Fasteners spaced 8 inches apart give you an allowable design wind… Sign up for a free trial and get instant access to this article as well as GBA’s complete library of premium articles and construction details.center_img This article is only available to GBA Prime Memberslast_img read more

Not enough reasons for withdrawal of forces from Darjeeling: Calcutta High Court

first_imgThe Calcutta High Court on Tuesday issued a stay on the Centre’s decision on the withdrawal of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) from the Darjeeling hills. A Division Bench of Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Debangsu Basak, while issuing an interim stay on the move, said the Centre had failed to provide enough reasons for the decision. The West Bengal government, which has opposed the Centre’s decision, had moved the High Court earlier in the day seeking a stay on it. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed the stay. When the Court wanted to know the reason, counsel representing the Centre referred to the elections in Himachal Pradesh. The Court observed that there were not enough reasons for withdrawal of the forces and asked the Centre to file an affidavit by October 23. The State government will reply to it by October 26 and the matter will come up for hearing on October 27.Earlier on June 14, while hearing a public interest litigation petition, the Court had directed the Centre to deploy additional companies of Central forces in the hills. On October 15, the Ministry of Home Affairs sent a communication to the West Bengal government announcing withdrawal of 10 of the 15 companies of the CAPF posted in the hills. Ms. Banerjee said she spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh after which he said seven companies would be withdrawn. Ms. Banerjee on Monday came down on the Centre’s decision and sent letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr. Rajnath Singh. Meanwhile, Surajit Purkayashtha, DGP, who is visiting the hills, said normalcy had returned and tourists were slowly coming back to the hills. He said many people who were trying to create disturbances had been arrested.last_img read more

STATE REP RACE QA Mike McCoy Discusses What Hell Do To Support

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Apple is asking weekly questions to the seven candidates running in contested primaries for the Wilmington/Tewksbury State Representative seat (19th Middlesex).Below, in his own words, are the responses to this week’s questions from candidate Mike McCoy (D-Wilmington).#15a) What you will do at the State House to ensure that our local police and fire departments have what they need to adequately protect us? The brave and dedicated men and women in our police and fire departments put their lives on the line every day. They are our first line of defense for the populations of Tewksbury and Wilmington. It would be irresponsible if I were to do anything less than my best to care for them as their State Representative as they are for me, my family and my neighbors. My platform and commitment to the deserving people in public safety is as follows. I will:Commit one day per month to meet with police, firefighters and EMT’s from Wilmington and Tewksbury. Face-to-face interaction and active listening are the best ways for an elected official to truly understand the needs and concerns of these heroes. You cannot provide these fine people with what they need without keeping your finger on their pulse and getting their direct input. They know best what they need.Provide every individual in public safety a business card with my office, cell and home phone number for direct and immediate access to me, 24/7.Ensure first responders’ salaries and benefits in Tewksbury and Wilmington remain competitive.File legislation to reinstate the death penalty for anybody convicted of taking the life of a first responder.Sponsor legislation to provide compensation for those families who lost a spouse or parent in the line of duty. The populations of Wilmington and Tewksbury are rapidly increasing. What was adequate in the past won’t cut it in the future. Response time for police, fire and EMS is frequently a matter of life and death. Our increasing populations in our communities directly impacts response time in two ways; the first is increased traffic. Think of Routes 38 and 62 today as compared to ten years ago. Now picture it ten years from now. The second factor is that increased populations and dwellings exponentially increase the probability of several emergencies occurring at the same time. Having a substation in North Wilmington will cut response time. Another reason for having this substation is the railroad crossing on Middlesex Avenue. Emergency response vehicles have waited for the commuter rail gates to be lifted. There is also an immediate danger associated with this crossing is the location is the MTBA commuter on/off boarding platform. The current location is too close to Middlesex Avenue. The crossing gate and train block the traffic on Middlesex Avenue for emergency response vehicles for minutes when seconds count. Resolving this critical public safety issue will be a high priority item if I am elected as your next state representative. Finally, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our public safety professionals.#15b) Do you support a fire substation in North Wilmington? The simple answer is yes. It is long overdue because of over-development combined with increased population.#15c) Did you/do you support the construction of the new center fire station in Tewksbury that was approved last year?I come from the school of common sense. My own observation dictates that simple answer is yes because of the rampant over-development and the the population explosion. With that being said, I took it upon myself to see Chief Hazel of the Tewksbury Fire Department on Friday August 3, 2018 and asked him a couple of basic questions in regards to the funding of the new Center fire station in Tewksbury. Chief Hazel is a complete gentleman and a true professional. He answered all of my questions and Tewksbury should be very proud to have him as their fire chief. I will always do everything in my power as state representative to ensure that the Tewksbury firefighters have everything they need to keep themselves and the residents safe.#16a) The Vietnam War Moving Wall recently visited Wilmington. It was a sobering reminder of what the men and women in our armed forces are willing to sacrifice to preserve our freedom. What will you do at the State House to support our local veterans and veterans statewide? The first time I visited the wall was in 2008 and again last week I visited the Vietnam Moving Memorial Wall when it came to Wilmington. It gave me pause and an opportunity to silently reflect on the ultimate sacrifice made by 58,193 young American men and women. They never had the opportunity to enjoy the full measure of life. Countless more will carry the scars of their service-related or psychological trauma to their graves. Even for those who returned unharmed, their thanks was frequently being spat upon and called, “Baby Killers!” This was a national disgrace. The debt that we owe our veterans is incalculable. As your state representative, I pledge to:Meet with the Veterans Services Departments in Wilmington and Tewksbury once a month to better understand the needs of our veterans and how I can help to fulfill those needs.Sponsor and support legislation that will improve the quality of life for these heroes.Arrange for State House tours for veterans and their families.Establish a communications link with the Tewksbury DAV and the Wilmington VFW and American Legion to explore ways that I can beter assist our prcious veteran population.Address all veteran concerns in a timely and effective manner.#16b) What, if anything, have you done as a private citizen and/or locally elected official that shows a commitment to veterans? While I have never worn an armed services uniform, I have always had the desire to dedicate myself to public service. I fulfilled this need by committing my life to 31 years to serving the public and 28 of those years (and counting) as a Wilmington selectman. Things that I have done to demonstrate my commitment to our veterans include:Making financial contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project, Fisher House and the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, MA.Marching in every Memorial Day parade for 28 years.Supporting the Wilmington Veteran’s service budget for as long as it has been established. In closing, I would like to give a heart-felt thanks to our veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. I would also like to extend my profound gratitude to Lisa Downey, the Tewksbury Veterans Service Officer, Lou Cimaglia IV, Wilmington Veteran Services Director and Michael Frotten, Wilmington Veteran’s Service agent for the fine work that they do for our veterans on a daily basis.#16c) Do you personally have any family that serves/served? Yes.(NOTE: Do you have a question for the candidates? Arm chip designs will speed up 2020 Android phones

Some companies, like Apple, license only the chip instruction set,  the interface that software uses to command a chip. Others license complete CPU designs, like the A77. Licensees combine those chip brains with other components, like Arm’s new Mali-G77 graphics processing unit, into a single package called a system on a chip. The A77’s performance boost over today’s chips, known as A76s, requires more power out of your phone’s battery, says Rene Haas, president of Arm’s intellectual property licensing group. Arm announced the new chip technology at the Computex show in Taiwan, along with plans by MediaTek to use it in chips coming early in 2020.Better performance is important for getting more out of our phones. We’re holding onto our phones longer, but when we do upgrade, speed lets us tap into new features, like useful speech-to-text transcription, video editing and gender-swapping Snapchat filters. What remains to be seen is whether Arm’s A77 will help Android phones close the performance gap with Apple’s iPhones. Apple’s iPhone XS scores 4,797 on the Geekbench speed test using Apple’s own processors, compared with 3,414 for the Samsung Galaxy S10 using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chip — the phone version Samsung sells in the US.Different chipmakers can choose to boost performance with features such as better graphics, dedicated circuitry for AI and larger amounts of cache memory for high-speed data access. All that makes chips bigger and more expensive, though, so chipmakers make different decisions about the best choices for their products.Arm also says its G77 graphics processing unit design is 40 percent faster than the current G76. That’s chiefly useful for gaming, where players can get fancier imagery or smoother motion, but also for higher resolution displays that have to churn through more pixel data.”The game will never stutter,” Haas said. And the extra performance is also good for the larger displays of folding phones, like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold.Though the A77 brain doesn’t come with dedicated circuitry for AI work the way higher-end processors from Apple and some others do, Arm offers an AI option through its Project Trillium designs. And even without that, lots of software uses the plain old CPU for AI. Arm’s optimization work gives a significant boost to AI software frameworks like Google TensorFlow, Haas said.Lots of mobile chipmakers employ other AI chip designs, but Haas thinks they’ll come into the Arm fold. “Unless it’s quite a bit higher performance, you have to ask yourself why you should build this when you can get it from Arm,” he said. 3 Comments Computex 2019 reading • Android phones due for 20% speed bump in 2020 with new Arm chip tech Mobile Qualcomm Processors ARM Samsung Applelast_img read more

MCD dithers holds up National Intelligence Grid

first_imgAs the Centre went about issuing an advisory on how to tackle terror in schools, its flagship intelligence security project – National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), proposed after 26/11terrorist attack in Mumbai, got stuck in a land dispute between South Delhi Municipal Corporation and Delhi Development Authority. On Friday, the standing committee of the civic body refused to pass the layout plan of the NATGRID building and directed the municipal commissioner to approach Delhi High Court to safeguard its interests on the disputed land. Also Read – Need to understand why law graduate’s natural choice is not legal profession: CJI“We will pass the layout plan of the building only if the payment made by Union Ministry for Home Affairs to DDA is paid to South DMC plus annual ground rent of the proposed building or DDA must allot a similar 10 acre land at a suitable place to construct infectious disease hospital proposed by the corporation,” said Subhash Arya, chairman of the standing committee of South DMC and ‘referred back’ the matter. The 10 acre land which is part of a 22.15 acre plot of South MCD at Andheria More in Mehrauli was given to CRPF on rent to set up a temporary unit two years back. The price of the plot is estimated to be Rs 7.4 crore. Also Read – Health remains key challenge in India’s development: Kovind“Neither DDA nor Land & Building department could present any record but the officers of the ministry accepted the verbal claims of these agencies to accept the ownership of DDA on the land,”  said Manish Gupta in a written reply in the meeting. He further added that the decision of the Additional Secretary of Union Ministry for Urban Development Bhupendra Bahuguna to reject all their documents of ownership as ‘not credible’ was wrong and arbitrary. “We are ready to put all our records for forensic test,” Gupta said. Amid the furious debate on the issue the commissioner was pulled up by all  members of the standing committee cutting across party lines for his inability to present the matter to the ministry in a proper way.  Taking part in the debate leader of Opposition Farhad Suri said, “South MCD functions as per an act of parliament so we are equal to any central government agency. No one is above us but parliament,” said Suri. NATGRID was proposed in 2008 by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and it approached South MCD in October 2013 to approve the layout plan of the building. After the new government took charge at the Centre it was expedited and three meetings were held between South MCD and NATGRID officers. On 7 October MHA asked South MCD to pass the layout plan ex post facto as the matter related to national interest and take the approval of the standing committee later but the civic body refused. On 14 October MUDS summoned a meeting of all the stakeholders and land ownership was decided in favour of DDA.last_img read more
